Welcome to the Valley

HI2 Valley (Hydrogen Industrial Inland Valley) is a massive, green hydrogen collaboration spanning three Austrian regions in the heart of Europe. Pioneering 17 projects, we collaborate to take on Europe’s energy challenges while empowering cleaner industry.
Over 6 years, we aim to establish a yearly production and utilisation of more than 10,000 tonnes of hydrogen. This formidable task, co-funded by the European Union, requires both national and international collaboration, as well as a projected electrolyser power equivalent of no less than 101 MW.

A Complete Hydrogen Ecosystem

The HI2 Valley project span across Carinthia, Styria, and Upper Austria, aiming to strengthen the entire hydrogen value chain from production, storage, and distribution to end use.
Through diverse partnerships, HI2 Valley will power factories, fuel vehicles with new hydrogen refuelling stations, and support applications such as wastewater treatment.
Each region will integrate open-access hydrogen pipelines and a centrally managed tube trailer network, ensuring coordinated and efficient distribution.

Cutting Carbon Where it Matters

HI2 Valley partners are committed to lowering emissions in some of the most energy-intensive industries, including steel, chemicals and cement.
By 2030, the valley aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across Austria’s industry, energy and mobility sectors by 200,000 tonnes of CO₂-equivalent.
In this way the HI2 Valley aims to directly contribute to the goals outlined in the European Green Deal, REPower EU and the national Hydrogen Strategy adopted by Austria in 2020.

Project Timeline

2025

Design, coordination and preparation. The project is establishing a standardised approach to everything from regulation to infrastructure within the HI2 Valley. A hydrogen safety plan is also being finalised.

2026

Deployment begins. Implementation of equipment, machinery and infrastructure begins at the various project sites. A roadshow to local Austrian communities will begin, sharing info and highlighting the project’s opportunities for the region.

2027

Deployment is monitored closely, and both environmental and socio-economic impacts of the project are evaluated.

2028

Test runs are completed in various projects. Monitoring continues, including day-to-day operations and the logistics of transporting hydrogen between source and end-user. During this phase the project will also analyse the potential for coupling and scaling hydrogen production beyond the initial HI2 Valley project.

2029

Further data- and operation reporting and status monitoring. The project analyses how to help build a sustainable circular economy for hydrogen, including the reuse and recycling of hydrogen infrastructure.

2030

Detailed studies for scaling-up renewable hydrogen production, interconnecting infrastructure and local hydrogen end-uses. In this stage the project will also deliver a detailed regional hydrogen supply roadmap to 2040. The project will report on achievements in hydrogen production the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and what lessons have been learnt.
