ABL – Advanced Bioenergy Lab Austria eGen

Profile: Advanced Bioenergy Lab eGen was founded in May 2024 as a research and technology transfer facility. In 2026, ABL will establish a real-world laboratory for the production of high-quality FT fuels (wood diesel) from biogenic residual materials with an input fuel power of 4 MW. After commissioning in 2028, further synthesis gas processes will be developed and demonstrated, such as biomethane, hydrogen or hythane production.
The medium-term goal is to build numerous 30 to 50 MW wood diesel plants throughout Austria. To this end, partners from three areas have been included into the cooperative and its projects:
- Area Primary production: Leading forest owners and agricultural partners are involved as cooperative members in order to leverage the significant potential of additional biomass and biogenic residues. This will increase the share of the Austrian primary energy mix by 200 PJ, i.e. the share of renewable energy will rise from the current 35% to over 50%.
- Area Science: Over the last 30 years, research institutions such as BEST, GET, TU Vienna, BOKU, Montanuni Leoben, FHWN and AIT have developed the fundamentals that are now being combined and demonstrated through the operation of the real-world laboratory.
- Area Implementation partners: Numerous industrial companies and energy suppliers are involved in the company in order to build numerous industrial-scale plants in their companies over the next few years.

AGGM Austrian Gas Grid Management AG

Profile:
As the Market and Distribution area manager, AGGM plans the gas infrastructure in cooperation with the gas and electricity grid operators using an integrated approach that takes all energy sectors into account. This ensures the availability of the gas infrastructure in line with demand.
In 2020, AGGM started planning the transformation of the methane infrastructure and created a concept for a dedicated hydrogen network. In 2022, AGGM developed the H2 roadmap 1.0 and published it in the long-term and integrated planning and the coordinated network development plan, the official planning instruments for gas network planning. Planning the dedicated hydrogen network is an ongoing task. The updated H2 roadmap 2.0 was published in 2024.
In this project, the hydrogen pipelines are planned at a very detailed distribution level. AGGM is therefore ideally suited to support the distribution network operators in their planning and to incorporate the hydraulic conditions of the higher network levels into the project.

Alpacem by Wietersdorfer

In the production of the clinker required for this, high quantities of CO2 are emitted in the conventional clinker production process. Around two thirds of these CO2 emissions come from the burning of limestone and one third from the provision of the thermal energy required for this.
In order to make the necessary contribution to the European Union’s ambitious plans for a green transition, great efforts are already being made to decarbonise the clinker production process.
Hydrogen has great potential to contribute to these plans: on the one hand, hydrogen could serve as a CO2-free source of thermal energy in the future; on the other hand, new products could be manufactured from captured CO2 in combination with hydrogen (CCU – Carbon Capture and Utilisation).

Evonik Peroxid GmbH

The legal entity belongs to the specialty chemicals group Evonik and is part of their business line Active Oxygens. This business line focuses on sustainability with the guiding principle “Sustainability is at the core of futurizing our business”. Therefore, a roadmap with different steps has been defined, with the clear goal of zero climate-damaging carbon dioxide emissions by 2040. Hydrogen peroxide decomposes into water and oxygen once the application has been completed. Therefore, no toxic by-products or co-products that could harm people or the environment are generated.
This unique chemical property makes hydrogen peroxide a sustainable chemical that can replace other, less sustainable chemicals in a range of applications. So, we are interested and support the HycentA research GmbH initiative, so that we receive green hydrogen at our site for the production process, in order to replace the grey produced hydrogen from the steam-methane reform process.
