A 5 MW electrolysis plant in Bergla, western Styria, will produce up to 750 tonnes of green hydrogen per year — a milestone project within HI2 Valley.
The decision is final: the largest industrial green hydrogen production facility in Styria will be built by Energie Steiermark in Bergla (district of Deutschlandsberg), with construction starting in autumn 2026 and completion planned for 2027. The H2 Hub Bergla project, part of the HI2 Valley hydrogen valley, is the result of a strategic partnership between the regional energy utility Energie Steiermark and Wolfram Bergbau und Hütten AG, a globally leading supplier of high-quality tungsten powders and part of the Sandvik Group. Wolfram will act as the first pilot customer for the hub, with a later expansion of the plant already envisaged.
The €25 million project centres on a 5 MW electrolysis plant that will produce up to 750 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, saving up to 8,500 tonnes of CO₂ per year. The facility receives national funding of up to €28.5 million over the next ten years from the Austrian Federal Ministry for Economy, Energy and Tourism.
For Wolfram, long-term access to green hydrogen is a decisive lever for reducing emissions in its core production processes and a central step towards net-zero emissions by 2050.
Most of the green electricity required for production will come from Energie Steiermark’s newly built wind parks in the district of Deutschlandsberg. A pipeline of around one kilometre will connect the production site in Bergla directly with the industrial area around St. Martin. A later integration of the plant into the pipelines of the European hydrogen networks is planned.
“With the H2 Hub, we are now realising a concrete cooperation project with a major industrial company, and we intend to use the experience gained as a basis for further hydrogen partnerships,” said Energie Steiermark board members Martin Graf and Werner Ressi, who noted that the utility had already taken first steps with its pilot plant in Gabersdorf and the founding of a dedicated hydrogen company in the past year.
